One of the most exciting things about web3 is how artists are showing up in creative ways unique to them — beyond the music. In this space, there are unlimited possibilities for how artists can connect with fans, and with each other. Today’s spotlight shines brightly on SUBCIETY, whose web3 journey has been subtle but steady, and steadily valuable to those in her circle.
One sure way to attract a following in web3 is simple enough: be consistent. SUBCIETY has an understated way of doing a whole lot and always at a high level. A listen to one of her recent WEB3 University Twitter spaces plays like a proper radio show: she opens with a theme, delivers her own carefully prepared & researched remarks in an introduction style (for this week, a conversation on meditation and her own personal growth with it as it relates to her craft of music making). The stage is set, the structure is sound, leaving listeners/participants feeling guided, and in trusted hands.
What’s most interesting to me about SUBCIETY’s online presence is the contrast between her regularly scheduled community conversations and her mysterious sound on her tracks. Vocals are shifted and pitched into voices that belong to… I’m not sure whom! She doesn’t seem too pressed to put herself center stage as a vocalist or songwriter, and the result is a music-forward, emotional soundscape of a listening experience more than one singular voice.
On one hand, it makes sense that these thoughtfully crafted tracks without a strong front woman presence would come from a career audio engineer and producer who is used to working around others. On another, it shows an impressive lack of ego that is hard to find in anyone, let alone artists in 2023; SUBCIETY is here to do the greatest service to the song, and she’s open to that meaning that her voice or presence is not the primary vehicle.
Switch gears back to WEB3 University, where SUBCIETY speaks for minutes on end without interruption. She’s studied yet casual; there is precision in her approach and word choice, a precision that also shines through in the music: production, style, even marketing.
SUBCIETY’s latest EP from this summer, TIDES, plays like a joyride on a California highway — vibes WILL be caught. The grooves and easygoing vocals penetrate your body before your mind catches on. We’re thrilled to catch her before a major web3 drop, and excited to see what directions she explores next as an artist, host, and more.
Artist Statement of the Moment:
I’m a music producer, audio/mixing engineer & artist from Los Angeles. Music & anything audio related really – is my career outside of web3. I’m super fortunate & proud to be able to say that for the past decade, I have had a Bachelors degree in Music Production. I got into web3 February of 2021 and have been deep down the rabbit hole ever since. I have released a few NFT collections on OpenSea and i have an upcoming drop in February.
How are you feeling now?
I’m feeling great! Currently in Florida escaping the catastrophic weather currently happening in California : (
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is fulfilling the small daily goals i set for myself. Becoming a better version of my self each and every day. Providing value and happiness to the people who i exchange energy with not just physically in person, but online as well.
What work of yours has you excited & inspired right now?
Just launched a new series on Twitter Spaces called “WEB3 University” where I provide the community with educational resources, tips, help onboarding, topics such as ‘Balance in web3.’ Learn, Grow & Inspire is the motto of WEB3 University. Live every Thursday 10a pt/1pm et!
What does web3 mean to you, and what excites you about it?
Web3 to me means a community of like minded individuals who work together to not only collaborate on projects & ideas, but value & support one another’s music & artistic projects. A revolutionary way for independent artists to be seen, heard and valued.
What artists/creators are inspiring you right now & why?
Every artist in the space provides me some sort of inspiration but the artist in web3 that I have recently really enjoyed his work is SUAVE – I recently collected a couple of his NFTs and they excite me not only listen to, but to be a part of his journey. I’m sure in a few years SUAVE will have blown up. He has that type of sound that is just addicting to listen to.
Fill in the blank: I wish the web3 music world was more ___________________.
I wish the web3 music world was more recognized and understood. I know all good things take time though and patience is always key. It will happen one day, sooner rather than later 😉
Describe yourself in one word!?
Optimistic
What question do you wish more people asked you?
“Where can I buy one of your NFT’s?” 😂
What message do you have for fans/supporters?
Think positive, for everything. Never allow anyone to tell you something is not possible. Your whole life can change in a year. Imagine the best case scenario for yourself every day and you’ll get far.
How do you stay grounded in the VERY online world of web3?
I make sure to stay in a high vibration throughout the day. I meditate, go on nature walks with my dog, journal and listen to podcasts on self development & spirituality.
