web3 music collabs are everything

Collaboration is for the people! Collabs bring us together, and WIN us together! Get it? Like, we all win when we collab — especially in web3 music. 😉

In this post, I’ll explore a few recent music collaborations in web3 — some I’ve personally been a part of, some not — and all of which have inspired me greatly. My goal is to capture these projects’ energy, excitement, and camaraderie, and also how all of it reverberates through the web3 music scene.

it’s the DUOS – Part 1 crew!

Songcamp – C4

Songcamp is BACK with its biggest project yet! I’ve been a fan of the Songcamp project for a while now, and it’s been so cool to track the evolution of their collaborative releases over time. I’ve also always appreciated how Songcamp writes about Songcamp so as to document their important role in web3 music history.

Songcamp presents: C4

C4 dropped on Friday, December 1st with a massive rollout party that involved DJ sets, live performances, giveaways, real-time bug fixes, and the coolest CD burning minting experience! Relive the excitement via Songcamp’s tweets, check out the five tracks on C4 (I proudly minted my unique copy of “Either Way”!), and be amazed at what people can achieve when they join forces!

DUOS

This collab project, which featured partners headphone homies, reveel, Max Pretends, and a couple of recording studios, found 10 music makers (all active in web3) coming together in “duos” to see what songs would come out of it. Spearheaded my artist Max Pretends, the rollout gave us some behind the scenes footage of artists working together in person, which is one of my fave things to see as a music fan. According to Max Pretends, who spearheaded the project, 600 people showed up to the drop in total & 270 total NFT’s were minted over a five-day period.

Big web3 names like Jadyn Violet and Leo Pastel are featured on this project, but everyone did their involved thing on these tracks. Check out the music from DUOS – Part 1 here on Zora.

PORTAL MIXTAPE 001

Eee! Portal Mixtape 001 is artist/producer/DJ Dot’s curated project for web3 — an assortment of tracks all mixed together into one 27-minute long set that goes HARD! I am on this (my track plays at around 20min mark and features Paula Pazos’ vocals!), and besides standing by all of the music on it, it means a lot to be on one of the first woman-led collaborative music projects to drop in web3!

EPIC

Dot talks a lot more in depth about the origins of Portal and her career journey in this mirror post, and you can hear the whole tape here on sound.

CC0lab Mixtape Vol. 1 Remix

Last but not least, we have a Songcamp remix side project, and I got to be a part of this tape as well! This 54-minute long tape is a collection of remixes made by producers from the Songcamp community (which I believe is still open to anybody, by the way, if you want to get involved!).

the artwork goes SO FXCKIN HARD!!!

The source material = songs created in a previous Songcamp side project under the CC0 spirit & license, which makes this mixtape a celebration of the Creative Commons of sorts. The mix is truly incredible, and the effort was largely led by artist-producer dontmesswithjuan. Check it out here!

Take Up Space…

Not music, but not not music!… because art is ART! 🙂 This curated visual art project brought together several artists for a celebration of diversity in art & culture, queer and otherwise. Zora featured the collection on its homepage for a while, and it seems like a lot of people in web3 came through to support — both the art and the mission of Take Up Space. Fire! Check out the collection here.
